The Chapel of Lapeyrouse
in Lafrançaise, locality of Lapeyrouse
You will experience a striking encounter as you discover an imposing dome, a unique panorama, and an impressive choir inside. Why is such a chapel alone atop this hill? Its origins are believed to date back to the 11th century, with its creation resulting from the evangelization of the Quercy hills from Moissac. It had fallen into ruin, and during its reconstruction, it was placed at the summit of the hill - a way for the Church at the time to maintain its influence and reaffirm its presence. The current monument, in Romano-Byzantine style, completed in 1879, is unique in Tarn-et-Garonne with its plan that concentrates everything into a small area.

Visiting the Bastide of Lafrançaise

Its ramparts were destroyed, and its name evolved: Ville Françoise, La Françoise, La Française, and finally Lafrançaise. Visitors can enjoy a pleasant stroll through its charming streets, shaped by intense commercial activity throughout its history, dotted with pleasant green spaces and shops. Along the way, one can gain elevation at the viewpoint and admire and understand the evolution of the main square and its imposing town hall. The discovery is fun for everyone, and if you're equipped, a bicycle circuit is also available to go a bit further and discover true gems like the Lapeyrouse Chapel or the Pontalaman Bridge, available at the tourist office.
